Chase clinching scenarios at Atlanta …
Newman 1. Who can clinch? Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch can clinch spots in the Chase by finishing at least 20th and seventh, respectively.
2. What do Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart need to do? Both could clinch a spot on Sunday, but would need some help. However, if Junior averages a 15th-place finish over the next two races, he's guaranteed a spot in the Chase, while Stewart gets in if he averages a sixth-place finish. They might not need to finish that high, but if they do, they are in.
3. What about the wild card? There are too many scenarios to mention. Brad Keselowski would clinch a spot in the Chase (not necessarily via the wild card) by finishing sixth or better.

The Eliminator: Atlanta edition
Most people just pick winners -- some by hunches, some by stats and some by just picking names off the top of their heads. I don't pick winners; I pick losers. I'll make my race pick by telling you why all but one driver in the field just can't win.

1. The last 19 Atlanta winners entered the race 19th or higher in points (28 eliminated, 19 remaining).

2. The last five and eight of the last nine Atlanta winners had at least 10 previous career wins (five eliminated, 14 remaining).

3. The last eight and 11 of the last 12 Atlanta winners finished in the top 12 in the most recent California race (five eliminated, nine remaining).

4. The last six fall Atlanta winners finished in the top 11 in the most recent Michigan race (five eliminated, four remaining).

5. The last five fall Atlanta winners finished in the top 11 in the most recent Las Vegas race (one eliminated, three remaining).

6. The last five and eight of the last nine Atlanta winners had a previous Atlanta win. (two eliminated, one remaining).

Your winner: Carl Edwards.

just saw on pre-race that they will wait as late as 10pm to start tonight to get this thing in. tomorrow's a literal wash out so if they don't get it in tonight they're looking at late tue or even wed to race

Important Practice Notes: Denny Hamlin scraped the wall during first practice but didn’t get any major damage. Brad Keselowski had a piece of debris puncture an oil pan during that session as well but I don’t think they had to change the engine (will update if they do). Kyle Busch scraped the wall (just barely) in Happy Hour and had very minimal damage to his right rear.

The top five drivers in the first practice session were:
1. Brad Keselowski – 187.722 mph
2. Denny Hamlin – 186.679 mph
3. Clint Bowyer – 185.016 mph
4. Martin Truex, Jr. – 184.911 mph
5. Mark Martin – 184.794 mph
Complete rankings of practice one can be found by clicking here.
The five fastest over ten consecutive laps in first practice were:
1. Martin Truex, Jr. – 179.291 mph
2. Jamie McMurray – 179.117 mph
3. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. – 178.813 mph
4. Jimmie Johnson – 178.420 mph
5. Kurt Busch – 178.382 mph

In Happy Hour, the five fastest drivers were:
1. Jeff Gordon – 182.392 mph
2. Tony Stewart – 181.979 mph
3. Clint Bowyer – 181.675 mph
4. Brad Keselowski – 180.669 mph
5. Greg Biffle – 180.557 mph
Complete rankings of this practice can be found by clicking here.
In terms of ten-lap average, the following were fastest in Happy Hour:
1. Tony Stewart – 176.630 mph
2. Brad Keselowski – 175.863 mph
3. Kurt Busch – 175.259 mph
4. Kevin Harvick – 175.100 mph
5. Matt Kenseth – 175.008 mph

AVERAGE PRACTICE SPEEDS:

Average practice speeds are calculated by taking the average speed of each driver in each practice and multiplying it by the number of laps ran. When you do this for each practice and add the totals together, and then divide by the total number of laps ran, you get an average of their practice speed, instead of just the one lap statistic you see when you look at practice sheets. The order that they are in is the overall average speeds rank of the two practice session combined.

Kevin Harvick at 174.649 mph over 62 laps
Carl Edwards at 174.568 mph over 50 laps
Dave Blaney at 174.232 mph over 29 laps
